Comparing the Incomparable?!?-Part I

People crack a joke and they know that they are joking because that’s what cracking a joke means. However, sometimes people crack a joke and they think that they are not joking.
Many a times I have encountered the latter situation. But, this time the latter situation became so hilarious that you can’t stop laughing days and nights together.
I was going through some books in a book store when I heard this, “Hey Man, have you read Lord of the Rings? It’s awesome man. Too Good. I have never read a fictional epic like this before. Mahabharata is nothing in front of it”
It was “THE JOKE”. How can one compare Mahabharata with Lord of the Rings? And is Mahabharata a fictional epic?
Then his friend cracked another joke, “Really Yaar. Mahabharata is nothing compared to LOTR. Mahabharata was so boring. Some Pandavas, a bunch of Kauravas, Lord Krishna and some guru’s and saint’s. They fight for a piece of land and then somebody wins… So boring… And just look at LOTR…four species, middle earth, fantasies…cool yaar…I have just seen the movie…….It’s so awesome yaar!”
It was certain that both of them had no knowledge of Mahabharata. They just might have seen some episodes of the T.V serial.
So, proving that Mahabharata is incomparable to LOTR or anything would be foolish as only ignorant people would like to compare the incomparable.
However, I soon realized that this was not considered as a joke for a section of our young society (From age group 16-24. Though many of us in this group know what the truth is.). This is especially not a joke for some of our school going readers who are very ignorant about Mahabharata. The above data reflects that I carried out a full fledged survey. However, there was no survey at all. I realized all this while I was chatting with my friends and with some people in discussion forums.
So, I have to become a foolish person (at least for this blog) as I will be comparing both the texts. Though I would not consider myself ignorant in this case as I have carried out quite a research before this comparison.
Truly saying, I am myself strongly against this comparison as comparing a religious text with a book is so very wrong. This comparison can end on the very point of origin itself. Mahabharata was created by Veda Vyasa who is regarded as the avatar of Vishnu in many Vaishnava traditions. Whereas, LOTR was created by a normal human. So, how the hell they can be compared? I raised this point a number of times. But the response which I got was, “See yaar, we respect Mahabharata. No doubts in it. What we are saying is that LOTR is so lengthy and comprehensive. What you have seen in the movie is just about the third age. There is first and second age also. There are a number of species, scripts, a detailed map, etc….So, its all about organization, depth and magnitude.”
What an ignorant mind!!!Tch, Tch…. They are mesmerized just by a fantasy. What they have overlooked is the role of Karma and Dharma in Mahabharata. But, many of those ignorant minds are not interested in truth or philosophical nature of Mahabharata. They are just looking for a logical comparison.
So, this comparison has become the need of the hour as on one hand our young society is living in such ignorance and on the other hand they call themselves the enlightened one’s of the 21st century.
I would be having an unbiased comparison based on facts and figures.
